Climbing & stress

With climbing, things can go wrong.
You usually fall. The extend of the damage of the fall is typically the main variable of how wrong things go.
But even this idea that you 'may fall, or will fall,' creates stress.
The body's fight or flight system becomes activated and the blood starts rushing to the limbs to allow better use of them, peripheral vision is narrowed so the climber can focus on what is in front of them. The body primes itself to deal with the impending threat.
Knowing how to discern real danger and manage the emotions, thoughts that can lead to stress is, therefore, very important.
STRESS IS STRESS
Whether it is happening on a climbing wall, rocks or when you are trying to complete your work before exams, the stress response is the same.
So how do you cope?
The initiation of the stress response means you have to burn off physically that energy that the sympathetic response creates. That means you need to move. Suggestions - if you have a heart rate monitor, this is easier, but if not, just work with recognizing the beating of your heart in your chest.
DO something - whether it is a stationary bike, stairs in your home or apartment building, do sun salutes, shoot hoops. But continue to move for 10-15 minutes, getting the heart rate up to about 100 beats per minute. Here is a little mental activity too; become aware of what thought is creating the anxiety and question it. Can you ABSOLUTELY, 100%,  know what you are thinking is true?

Usually the answer to that question is no. But in the event that the answer is yes, ask yourself whether there is anything helpful to you in believing, thinking, being stressed about the thought? Here, the answer is definitely NO.
Repeat as often as necessary. With as many stressful thoughts as necessary. Check out Byron Katie... The Work.com
